TOTALENERGIES LAUNCHES FLOATING WIND PILOT FOR NORTH SEA PLATFORMTotalEnergies has unveiled plans to launch a pilot floating wind turbine project to power its Culzean offshore gas platform in the North Sea. The 3 MW turbine, set to be operational by late 2025, will be situated 2 km west of the platform, 220 km off Scotland's eastern coast and aims to supply around 20% of Culzean's power requirement, significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The project utilizes a modular, light semi-submersible floater hull designed by Ocergy, enabling efficient assembly and cost optimization. TotalEnergies has emphasized the project's dual objectives: demonstrating the feasibility of hybrid power generation on offshore facilities and qualifying a promising floater design for future floating offshore wind developments.Selected as part of Crown Estate Scotland's Innovation and Targeted Oil & Gas (INTOG) leasing round, this pilot project represents a step towards integrating renewable energy sources with existing offshore oil and gas operations, paving the way for more sustainable practices in the industry.⚡ Follow MPS (Modern Power Systems) for all the latest news daily from the globalpower generation industry ⚡#MPS #power #windenergy #decarbonization #energytransition

Another example of how the technology and expertise within the oil and gas field can be re-packaged in a more sustainable light. Secondly, this also speaks to the willingness of key energy players to collaborate in building renewable solutions. Lastly, this is also (unfortunately) another example of how little attention these types of initiatives get amidst alarmist vitriol against the energy sector. #oilandgasindustry #sustainableenergysolutions

Innovate UK Business Connect and Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult (ORE) are supporting the ORE Floating Offshore Wind Centre of Excellence (FOW CoE), and its 17 member companies, including SIMPLY BLUE and Flotation Energy in the offshore wind industry, to find UK-based solution providers who can provide innovative solutions for quick connection and disconnection of dynamic cables.Connect and disconnect solutions are currently not well developed, are costly, time consuming to perform in an emergency and can damage the cable system, so solutions need to enable the quick connection and disconnection of cables from floating structures and/or the seabed with the aim of increasing speed of cable installation and maintenance or service operations.🚨Deadline to apply: 26 August 2024. Selected solution providers will have the opportunity to pitch their concepts to ORE Catapult’s FOW CoE.🔗Learn more & apply > https://ow.ly/x4V150SLWcj#offshorewind #innovators #dynamiccables #windturbines #floatingoffshore

It’s exciting to witness Wind Turbine capacities scaling up to 15 MW. There is a learning curve to each technology and over time experience helps to improve and achieve efficient operation. This scale of WTG output is worthy of being called an ‘engineering marvel’! Last week, we were having an interesting discussion with our Risk Engineering colleagues…. contrary to normal perception, just scaling up does not guarantee efficient peak performance. Each machinery needs to be engineered to perform at optimum loads equipment has to be designed for the same! With lesser no. of machines, the challenges of erecting multiple offshore units are reduced but new challenges emerge with larger and heavier equipment, especially in offshore environment. How about considering to compare downtimes and business income loss exposures… one 15 MW machine V/S 10 WTGs of 1.5 MW each. What do you think of it as an insurance underwriter?

A group of top Japanese companies is moving forward with a government-backed project to test large-scale floating vertical-axis wind turbines. They believe this new design can improve efficiency and support the development of commercial floating offshore turbines. As part of Japan's push to make renewable energy a key power source, this project will explore the feasibility of floating turbines. It falls under the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) initiative, aimed at advancing floating offshore wind technology.Japan’s deep coastal waters make traditional offshore turbines difficult, so this project focuses on innovative floating solutions. The design offers similar benefits to horizontal-axis turbines but uses smaller, more affordable floating platforms.#japan #windturbine #verticalaxisturbines #turbine #electricity #Power #energy #cleanenergy

#WindPower #France #AilesMarine #SaintBrieucOffshoreWindFarm #SiemensGamesa #SG8_0_167DD_WindTurbines"Located 16 kilometres off the northwest coast of France in the Bay of Saint-Brieuc in the English Channel, the Saint-Brieuc offshore wind farm features 62 Siemens Gamesa SG 8.0-167 DD wind turbines with the first unit being installed at the site in May last year. The halfway installation mark was reached in August while the last wind turbine was installed at the end of 2023.To remind, the project produced its first power in July under the supervision of Iberdrola’s maritime coordination centre based in Kerantour.Ailes Marine announced on 11 March the start of production of 31 wind turbines or half of the units installed at the offshore site. According to its developer, the commissioning of the 496 MW Saint Brieuc will continue until spring 2024.The electricity generated is collected by the offshore substation at the centre of the wind farm from where it is carried by two 225 kV subsea export cables installed by France’s RTE (Réseau de Transport d’Electricité) to Caroual beach in Erquy. Renewable electricity is injected into the grid via the Doberie substation located in Hénansal (Côtes-d’Armor).Once fully commissioned, the Saint-Brieuc offshore wind farm will produce around 1,820 GWh/year, which corresponds to the annual electricity consumption of 835,000 inhabitants (heating included) or nine per cent of Brittany’s total electricity consumption, said Ailes Marines."
